Details

Artist exploring landscape and belonging. Inspired by the land, sea, shore and sky of West Wales.

Ann Fletcher-Williams has lived in Cardigan, Ceredigion since June 2022 but has been a regular visitor to this part of Wales since she was 15 months old. Family holidays in Newport, Pembrokeshire forged a life-long love affair with the majestic hills, rugged coast and endlessly fascinating shoreline of West Wales. Ann's work is about being in and moving through the Pembrokeshire and Cardiganshire landscape. She is driven by the Welsh term Hiraeth, which is a word without a direct English translation, but has a complex and layered meaning something akin to homesickness, longing, memory and identity. Ann creates richly layered and deeply colourful paintings which evoke her special relationship with the landscape; its shapes, contrasts, layers, hidden elements and textures. She uses mixed media, mainly acrylic paint and collage with oil pastels, pens and pencils to make her paintings and loves exploring what colour can be in relation to the landscape.
